Gynaecologists to conduct ultrasound, doctors split

MUMBAI: Gynaecologists will no longer have to depend on radiologists for conducting ultrasound clinical imaging. According to the latest circular from the Centre, medical practitioners with post graduation degrees in gynaecology and obstetrics are qualified for conducting ultrasound in a genetic clinic/ultrasound clinic/imaging centre.

MRI-guided focused ultrasound system could offer Parkinson’s relief

InSightec Ltd., a privately held Israeli firm partly owned by General Electric Corp., received the Food and Drug Administration’s blessing to carry out a phase I trial of a Parkinson’s treatment that uses MRI scans to guide blasts of ultrasound energy to destroy problem tissue in the brain.

The non-invasive treatment is one of several uses of the device now under investigation for the ExAblate family of devices — MR-guided focused ultrasound products, including those blasting cancers and bone metastases.

Panda pregnancy watch continues; ultrasound inconclusive

Mei Xiang, the National Zoo’s female panda, has been coy with her keepers.

The giant panda may be pregnant, the zoo announced last week, and after several failed attempts, she cooperated for an ultrasound this morning.

The zoo live-tweeted the ultrasound this morning, which ended when Mei Xiang left her training cage to go back to her enclosure. Zoo officials announced through Twitter that the ultrasound was inconclusive.

A contribution from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians has enabled the Mountains Community Hospital ED, which serves approximately 7,000 patients annually, to obtain a mobile ultrasound imager for the emergency department.

The hospital provides the only emergency care available in the western mountains. It is isolated from medical centers in the Inland Empire by narrow winding mountain roads and has been designated by the state and federal governments as a Critical Access Hospital.

Siemens to buy ultrasound technology company

Siemens Healthcare said Tuesday it inked a deal to buy nearly all of the assets of Penrith Corp., a privately held company that’s working on new ultrasound technology. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

In a press release, Siemens said the purchase would strengthen the “diagnostic capabilities” of its line of ultrasound units.
